Free Wordpress Theme: OrangeCones by Themey

Remember those kitschy “Under construction”animated gifs we all loved? Little hardhat wearing stick guys with orange construction cones, blinking and digging to let you know that the webmaster was aware of his site’s shortcomings and it was all ok because it was “Under Construction”… ah, those were the days. Well now, you can recapture some of that magic in the new free Wordpress theme “OrangeCones” by Themey. A nice two-column theme with black background, gray content blocks and of course some big orange cones (how could it not have cones with a great name like that?)

It’s funny - I had to “recreate” this post from memory after the Great Database Crash of 2007, and I’m surprised at how much I STILL like this theme! I’ve downloaded it myself, and it may even make an appearance on this blog in the near future, considering the circumstances.

Free Wordpress Theme: Rubi

You really KNOW a theme is “web 2.0″ when it has rounded corners and mock transparencies… and if that’s your bag then you’re going to just love Rubi by biboz. The only thing that could make this Wordpress theme MORE web 2.0 would be the use of blue instead of red.

I kid, I kid, The fact is this is one slick and very nicely done theme which uses a selection of reds and pinks. The word that comes to mind when I look at this one is polished’ - in fact, it would be a great free Wordpress template for a fashion blog since it makes me think of a high quality glossy red nail polish. Before you ask, yes, it’s fully cross browser compatible, so no matter what browser your visitors prefer, they’re going to see the site as you intended. And wonder of wonders, it even plays nicely at 800×600 resolution (can you guess that’s a pet peeve of mine?)

Rubi derives it’s polished look from copious use of gradients - just about every image on this theme has some sort of shadow or highlight applied to it. However the overall effect is very nice and not overdone at all. If only this theme had come out a few weeks earlier, it would have been absolutely gorgeous for Valentine’s day. Ah well, it’s a free Wordpress template - what more could you really ask for? Download this one, I think you’ll get a lot of use out of it.

Free Wordpress Theme: Orange by Milo

Now THIS is what I’m talking about when I say I want to see something different in a free wordpress theme. Milo has released his new theme, Orange, and it’s absolutely yummy. A lovely orange background and the header is SO beautifully abstract with streamers hanging from a center post - maybe that’s just me reading too much into it, I don’t know. But it makes me think of a maypole in spring, which can’t be a bad thing.
Pluses - I like the way the background image lines up on the left with the three column design. It’s a very beautiful, organic design and I could definitely see myself using something like this. Downsides? Once again, a three column design which does not QUITE fit into 800600 space in the Firefox browser - I get that annoying little scrollbar at the bottom, so although I don’t HAVE to scroll to read the text, it just sits there and mocks me. Fortunately this theme works perfectly in IE 7, so I suppose this is a forgivable blip (especially considering how nummy the theme is to begin with.)

Don’t take my word for it though:
