It’s not easy being green…

Another day, another free wordpress theme. This one is nice as we start rolling into spring, as it features a lovely lush picture of trees and grass. This nice little theme called Pixelgreen by edwin has a lovely clean look. Classic two column design, optimized for SEO. The picture is maybe a BIT fuzzy, but that may just be my eyes. I do like the green header text – but the biggest bugaboo on this one is it does not scale nicely into an 800×600 screen. Yes, there ARE still people using the smaller screen size for goodness sakes! So if you’re not worried that you have surfers with the smaller screen resolution, and you’re as sick of winter as I am, this might be the theme for you.

Why Free WordPress Template reviews?

Tough question :) With so many free WordPress templates being released on an almost daily basis, the problem becomes finding one that’s different. One that suits your blog. Anyone can provide a dry laundry list of features (if I see “widget ready” one more time I’m going to scream!) but what I look for when I’m trying to decide if I like a theme is different.

What are the colors? The feel? How does it flow? What makes this theme worth adding to the absolutely insane collection of themes filling my hard drive? What I am looking for is more than a feature set – I want a fashion review.

So that’s what I’m going to try to provide. A quick trip down the runway with free wordpress themes that have been recently released (as well as some old favorites) and a link where you can pick them up. Don’t ask me for an exhaustive list of features, because you’re not going to get it (it’s why i provide the links, darling!) or, god forbid, technical support. But if you want a light, entertaining read that helps you find a few new, interesting free wordpress themes then I’m probably your girl.

Free WordPress Theme: Slider

I love new WordPress themes – especially free ones. But let’s be honest, here; many of them look exactly alike. A quick three column SEO template on a white background, or maybe for variety two columns on a black background – so I’m in an especially good mood when I get something, well, different.

The free wordpress theme Slider from KarmaDude is exactly that. First, I’m diggin on the color – a rich, lush chocolate brown which I just don’t think you see enough of when it comes to web pages. The ‘sliding action’ as each block is drawn via javascript is nicely done – interesting without falling into the ‘annoying’ trap. Everything looks lovely whether viewed in Firefox or IE and in general it’s the type of theme I’d like to see a lot more of.

My only complaint is a minor one – obviously if I have javascript turned off, there are issues. I can’t browse the blog any longer, or open the menus, or well, anything – which although a minor complaint I think is still valid. After all, there are some folks who surf with javascript off to slow down the flood of popups, so a site like this would be best served if it degraded gracefully when javascript is not present.

All in all, though, this is a minor complaint. If you haven’t already downloaded it for your library, you won’t be disappointed. You can view the demo for slider here, or download it directly here.
